In addition to my applied work, I’ve had the great pleasure of doing research. Most recently, my colleague, Ahmmad Brown, and I investigated how organizational leaders understand the exclusion of disabled people in their organization, along the lines of structural, social and symbolic exclusion. We found that leaders were largely aware of structural exclusion, even though it still existed, somewhat aware of social exclusion and not at all aware of symbolic exclusion. We used this research to create a practical guide for organizations who are looking to further their disability inclusion work.
